For Anxious & Sensitive Patients

If it's been a while, we understand.

Dental anxiety is real, common, and often the reason great people stop coming to the dentist. We built Vantara so that walking back through the door is the hardest part of the visit — not anything that happens after.

Who this is for

You are not rare, difficult, or dramatic.

Somewhere between a quarter and a third of adults experience meaningful dental anxiety. A meaningful fraction haven't been to a dentist in more than five years because of it. We know this — and every single person on our team has trained around it.

You don't need to have a diagnosis, a backstory, or an apology. Telling us you're nervous on the intake form is enough — and we'll take it seriously from the first phone call through the last follow-up.

Calm, non-clinical treatment environment
Our protocol

What happens, in the order it happens.

Every anxious-patient visit follows this exact sequence. Predictability itself is part of the treatment.

01

The phone call before the visit

A real team member calls you back — we ask what has made past visits hard, what helps you feel safer, and whether you want a pre-visit office walk-through. That call takes whatever time it takes.

02

Meet before anything happens

Your first visit can be fully clothed, in the consult room, no dental chair, no gloves. Just a conversation. We only examine when you're ready. For many patients, that's day one. For some, it's day three. Both are fine.

03

A stop signal that works

We agree on a hand signal before starting. When you use it, we stop — instantly, without question. Patients tell us knowing they can stop means they rarely need to.

04

Comfort tools, default

Nitrous, weighted blanket, noise-damped headsets, pillow behind the neck, dim lights, numbing gel before injections, extra-long numbing time. Not upgrades — defaults. Just say which ones you want.

05

Narrated work

Your clinician tells you what's happening before each step — "you'll hear water now," "this is the cold test," "three minutes left." Predictability reduces startle response. It's one of the most-requested things anxious patients ask us to keep doing.

06

A debrief, same day

After the visit we review how it went. What worked. What was hard. What we'll change next time. Your next appointment is only scheduled when you're ready — never on the way out.

Sedation options

If more help is needed, it's here.

Most anxious patients do well with nitrous and time. For patients who need more, we offer oral conscious sedation in-house and IV sedation through a partner anesthesiologist.

Nitrous oxide

The simplest and most common sedation. Feels like a warm, calm weight. Clears in five minutes after we remove the mask — you can drive yourself home.

$85 per appointment · Driver not required · Available at every visit

Oral conscious sedation

A prescribed pill (usually triazolam) taken an hour before your visit. You're awake but deeply relaxed, typically remembering little of the procedure. Requires a driver.

$295 · DOCS-certified clinician on-site · Recovery ~3 hrs · Driver required

IV sedation (partner anesthesiologist)

For cases requiring deeper sedation — extensive surgery, severe past-dental-trauma, or personal preference. A board-certified anesthesiologist manages sedation while we do the dentistry.

$850–$1,100 per hour · In-office · Driver required · Advance scheduling

Patient voices

How it actually feels.

"I hadn't been to a dentist in nine years. My first visit at Vantara was 45 minutes of just talking. I cried in the parking lot after, in a good way. Six months later I'm caught up on everything and actually looking forward to my next cleaning."
Rachel P.Anxious Patient · Austin
"I have pretty severe misophonia and couldn't handle dental drills. Dr. Nakamura worked out a protocol with me that included proper noise-cancelling headsets and a signal for breaks. I just finished two crowns, awake, with no panic. I didn't think that was possible."
Daniel L.Misophonia · Zilker
"I asked if I could just come in, sit in the chair, and leave — no exam, no scan, nothing. They said yes. I did it three times before my first real appointment. No one rushed me. No one made me feel weird. This is how healthcare should work."
Allison M.PTSD-aware care · Hyde Park
"My kid is autistic and sensory-avoidant. They let us tour the office twice before the first visit, turned off the overhead light, and used bite-blocks with sensory fabric. It was the first dental visit she didn't cry through in five years."
Priya R.Sensory-aware care · Westlake

Start with a conversation. Nothing more.

Your first appointment can be entirely talk. No examination, no imaging, no chair if you don't want it. When you're ready, we're here. When you're not, we're still here.
